The center serves as a home for at-risk children who have grown up amidst conditions of poverty and war. We specifically give consideration to girls who have often been victims of sexual harrasment and abuse and those that were affected by the war in the north of Uganda that recently ended. Many have lost one or more of their parents due to war and Aids and have often lost hope, home, and meaning in their lives. The harsh realities of daily survival rob them of the ability to envision a different future – for themselves and their communities. We seek to ensure that these children grow up with the love of a supportive family and a place to call home. We hope that by providing a caring and nurturing environment, the children will realize their potential and excel and shine.
The children live at the center and we provide shelter, food, health care, counseling and a nurturing environment for 25 children. Most of the children are between 10 and 16 years old and two are now attending college. Our students, all of whom come from vulnerable backgrounds, consider the home to be critical because it gives students an instant community, and our houses provide an atmosphere that promotes learning and collaboration.
“There is a strong sense of hope — a strong sense of resourcefulness in them. The parenting that’s being done there and the sense of values that is being instilled in the kids is heartwarming.” LuAnn Heinerts.
